Rose Amélie Icard, the Vauclusian from the Titanic
Born in 1872 in Murs, Rose Amélie Icard grew up in a modest family before moving to Paris, where she became a lady-in-waiting for Martha Stone, an American widow. This is how she boarded the Titanic in first class in 1912. The voyage promised to be sumptuous, but on April 14, everything changed when an iceberg struck the liner.
In the panic of the shipwreck, Rose and Martha managed to reach a lifeboat. On board, Officer Charles Lightoller led the operation. They were rescued the next day by the Carpathia. Rose, forever scarred by that tragic night, returned to France and settled near Grenoble, where she lived until 1962, at the age of 92, without ever marrying or having children.
One last secret
Upon her death, a surprising discovery was made near her: a black wooden box, evidently used to communicate with spirits. Inside, a strange light bulb device, seemingly inspired by Edison's necrophone, appeared to have been her preferred instrument for contacting the afterlife. Beside it, a carefully folded rowboat dress suggested that Rose had maintained a mysterious connection to that night of the Titanic, a subtle connection between the worlds of the living and the departed.
In the silence of his room, this last vestige of his life aroused a particular emotion, a tragic romanticism: that of a soul which, even after so many years, had never ceased to search, in the shadows, for the lost voices of the past.
